The Istanbul Series from EthnoAudio is a wide-ranging collection of recordings from the Turkish culture. In this EthnoAudio program, Judith Pearson explores the music and dance from the Western Turkish city of Izmir. This show also features a recording of a live concert by Istanbul's Gülben Ergen to celebrate International Women's Day. Within the EthnoAudio community, we're all about exploring different cultures through sound. That sentiment rings true for this episode as well as it features several music and dance styles from Izmir, one of Turkey's largest cities on its western coast. While not as indigenous as other regions in Turkey, the music and dance of Izmir has a uniquely modern and western influence: jazz. The music of Izmir is diverse, but it does share something in common: the Turkish language. Another commonality between these musical styles is that they all take their roots from Turkey's classical traditions. Nowadays, Izmir is known for its sports teams and its tacky nightclubs, but it was at one time a cultural hub for folks from all over the world that came to study Western music and dance. From these influences, Izmir has become a Mediterranean city and is known for its vibrant culture. While many music and dance styles from Turkey embody relatively modern genres, the ethnic and folk styles that we'll be exploring in this episode are decidedly not — especially the music of Çeşme, a town situated on the Aegean coast. Çeşme is known for its seafaring culture and is one of many coastal towns in Izmir's Western province. Our first stop today will be to Çeşme's Karaburun district where we'll visit with musician Murat Ergün on his family farm. Murat will be sharing with us the folk music traditions of his birthplace along with some stories about it. The next stop on today's journey will be to the city of Izmir itself. Here, we'll be hearing about the local music and dance traditions from musician Gülben Ergen, who will also be performing live for this episode. After her performance, Judith chats with Gülben about her life in Izmir and her musical influences. This segment also features audio excerpts from interviews with folks in Çeşme that talk about their local musical traditions. Finally, we'll take a look into some of the less traditional musical styles that have become part of Izmir's modern culture. With its Western coast and cultural influences from all over, Izmir is known for its vibrant nightlife and is home to a number of popular nightclubs and music venues. This episode will focus on one such club, "Kalyon," or "Siege" — plus we'll take a look at the music scene in general as local musicians talk about what goes on inside these clubs. Also featured will be an exclusive live performance by Gülben Ergen as she takes us into the world of jazz with her latest album "Yaşamak" or "To Live. eccc085e13
